ACNE AND SUN: FRIENDS OR FOES
DISCOVER THE ANSWER
Beware as the sun feels at first as if it is doing your skin good! The truth is that the sun can be deceptive, pretending to be a friend of prone-acne skin. This is due to the bactericidal effect of UV rays, as well as the fact that a light tan will hide the appearance of lesions. In fact, when you are in the sun, pimples dry out and blackheads are hidden under your tan. However, microcysts pop out after the vacation is over, usually three weeks later. When fresh acne scars are exposed to the sun, they can leave unsightly and lingering brownish spots. In the end, sunbathing with no photo-protection will always exacerbate your acne, and can even cause complications if you are under some medication.
OUR ADVICE: TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SKIN CARE ROUTINE:
Gel or water to cleanse the face twice a day
There are special cleansing gels available for oily, blemish-prone skin such as the Cleanance Soapless Gel Cleanser. Alternatively, you can use a no-rinse water, such as Cleanance Cleansing Water, which will cleanse and remove make-up avoiding irritant hard water from the tap. You could even use one in the morning and the other in the evening; the most important rule is that the product should combine a cleansing action (without irritation) using gentle cleansing agents, a mattifying action (acting on hyperseborrhea) and a purifying action (reducing the number of P. acnes, the bacteria responsible for acne).
Moisturizers and topical creams
For optimum results, daily skin care products such as topical creams and moisturizers containing special active ingredients should be applied every day, morning and evening. Amazing developments in product formulas result in light, pleasant-to-use, effective and very well tolerated versions.
Scrubs and absorbent masks
Go easy! A scrub and/or mask can be used once a week, but choose gentle ones in order to avoid skin irritation - this may happen if the scrub is too abrasive. Thus, we recommend the Cleanance Exfoliating Absorbing Mask for its triple action: Unclogs, absorbs and exfoliates in just 5 minutes. If needed, you can soothe your skin with a spray of Avène Thermal Spring Water – just leave it on your skin for 2 minutes.
The use of a specially adapted photo-protection product helps to limit and indirectly prevent post-exposure relapse once the holidays are over. Sunscreens like the High Protection Emulsion SPF 40, with fluid, matte textures, will help to limit the comedogenic effects of the sun and the appearance of pigment scars.
Finally, if you are undergoing acne treatment, ask your dermatologist for advice before going on vacation as some treatments do not agree with sun exposure.
