WHAT IS IT?
Atopic eczema is mainly characterized by dry skin, redness and inflammation and often intense itching. It alternates between flare-up and remission periods
-
WHERE?
Depending on age, dry patches and redness generally occur in specific localized areas.
In infants, they are mainly found on the cheeks, forehead, the arms and legs. Then, very quickly, they begin to appear in the skin folds (neck, elbows, knees). -
WHY?
Atopic eczema is a complex disease which is mainly associated with two anomalies:
Skin with damaged barrier, that makes it dry and unusually sensitive.
A more sensitive immune system to allergens, making the skin more reactive.
-
WHO IS AFFECTED?
The number of patients with eczema has tripled in the last 30 years. 10-15% of the population in Canada is affected.
1 child in 5 suffers from eczema.
This means that in a class of 25, 4 other children will have the same type of skin problems as him.

NORMAL SKIN
THE SKIN FULFILLS ITS FUNCTION OF PROTECTIVE BARRIER:
- Skin cells and cement are of good quality.
- Water evaporates normally and in small amounts.
- Allergens cannot enter.

ATOPIC SKIN
THE SKIN DOES NOT FULFILL ITS FUNCTION OF PROTECTIVE BARRIER:
- Skin cells and cement are of poor quality.
- Too much water evaporates.
- Skin is dehydrated and dry.
- It lets allergens enter more easily, which may provoke an inflammatory response.
Treating
your atopic skin
Your physician can prescribe local medicinal treatment to soothe red plaques (topical corticosteroid cream).
In addition, they will advise you to apply emollients (moisturizing creams) every day, outside of flare-up periods.
Emollients help hydrate the skin and soothe itching sensations*.
There are lots of tips to prevent scratching and the complications associated with it.
CER-OMEGA
These are lipids similar to those in the skin. They help repair and nourish the skin barrier, and increase its resistance to daily external aggressions.
