Even though many people find that their eczema improves with exposure to the sun, careless exposure can be seriously harmful for the skin. It is important to protect your skin at all times with an effective sunscreen. Here is our advice to take charge of your eczema this summer:

Moisturize your skin

- Apply more moisturizers than usual
- Always apply moisturizer about half an hour before applying sunscreen
- Be gentle when applying your sunscreen, try not to rub too hard as this may set off a cycle of itching
- Use thicker emollient at night before going to bed

The recommended product: XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cream, for its enveloping texture and active ingredients that target specifically the components of atopic dermatitis.

Protect your skin

There are plenty of sunscreens on the market and it can be hard to figure out the right one for you. Some provide protection against UVB rays, others also protect against UVA’s. They can range from a SPF 2 up to 100. Actually, someone with very fair skin or who has eczema that worsens in sunlight should use a sunscreen with a high SPF, therefore of 30 and above.

Another factor you may wish to consider is the base of the sunscreen. There are three types: A chemical based sunscreen, which can irritate eczema, a non-chemical mineral based sunscreen or a product that is a combination of both chemicals and minerals. Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin while those who are non-chemical stay on the skin’s surface and act as a barrier which deflects the sun’s rays. Since they tend not to be absorbed, some people with eczema prefer to use mineral-based rather than chemically-based sunscreens.

The recommended product: Mineral Cream SPF 50, for its protection against UVB-UVA rays as well as its formula that’s chemical filters free, fragrance free and photostable.

Beat the heat!

During the summer period, heat and sweat can make your skin itchy and irritated. So wear light clothing: It will protect you against harmful sun exposure and keep your body cool. Wear clothes made of natural fibers such as cotton or linen and try to avoid synthetic fabrics. Also, try to stay away from activities that make you hot and sweaty. If exercising, be sure to shower right away, to ensure that the sweat has no chance to irritate your skin. You can also take a bath in lukewarm water with cleansing products appropriate for eczema to help soothe your skin.

The recommended product: XeraCalm A.D Lipid-Replenishing Cleansing Oil, for its gentle, fragrance free and soap free formula.
