Respecting the oceans

Summary of the issue

Respecting the oceans

Every year, we dump about 25,000 tonnes of sun cream into the oceans, or 1 litre per second*. About 10% of the world's corals are thought to be directly affected by UV filters**. How can we protect skin from the sun's rays without threatening the marine ecosystem? Eau Thermale Avène Laboratories is trying to find a solution to the problem through its Skin Protect / Ocean Respect environmentally responsible charter.

Awareness of the impact of sun filters

All over the world, marine habitats are threatened by industrial pollution and pollution from land-based sources, which make up a large part of marine pollution (agricultural pollution, fertiliser waste, pesticides, untreated waste and plastic, etc.). The cosmetics industry is also gradually becoming aware of the impact of sun filters on the marine ecosystem and is looking for ways to address this.

Eau Thermale Avène develops its sun care products with a view to minimising their impact on the environment  For Eau Thermale Avène, this involves both strong commitments and concrete decisions. Thus, the Eau Thermale Avène laboratories have tested the filters of its sun care products on 3 key species of marine biodiversity*.
